Learning a Habit I Forgot

I am reading the #1 New York Times Best Seller – The Four Hour Work Week and finding it quite entertaining.

As someone who lives in Jamaica, it would seem that I am living the author’s dream to some extent! More on this later, to be sure.

One immediate benefit this book has brought me is that I realized that I had fallen back into the trap of checking email at all sorts of times during the day. I remember scheduling the times when I used to check email, and I even plan to teach it in the upcoming 2Time Pilot.

However, my own practices have devolved into random checking, and multiple distractions.

Luckily, it wasn’t hard to fix as I merely placed it in my Scaffold, added the activity to my daily weekday schedule and gave myself a visible reminder in my list of habits to be tracked each day.

And of course, it started working immediately.

But I still feel the craving for email distraction… to click that Send/Receive icon in Outlook and to sit with bated breath for something useful to come in.

Email is difficult to control as we never learn to teach ourselves good habits, and instead stumble around trying one thing and then another. It needs some strong action now and again to cut the addiction, not unlike quitting cold turkey.
